What the Helensburgh Community Council’s Bid Means for Helensburgh’s Youth

Helensburgh’s scenic waterfront has been a contentious topic, with multiple proposals vying to shape the future of the coveted site. In December 2023, Helensburgh Community Council set an ambitious vision rooted in community priorities.

Central among those priorities? The needs of our youth.

The HCC bid, currently under review by Argyll and Bute Council, promises much-desired facilities and spaces to serve teens and young families once complete. This includes:

A Permanent, State-of-the-Art Skatepark
Inspired by renowned nearby resident and pro-BMX athlete Kriss Kyle, the proposal calls for a 480 sq. meter concrete skatepark. This would provide bowls, grind rails and pads specifically designed to accommodate a wide spectrum of activities – skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters, and inline skates.

Giving teens a dedicated space to skate would foster increased physical activity. It would also facilitate community bonding by providing a central hang-out spot.

Multi-Purpose Green Space
Adjacent leisurely areas with benches, trees and a bouldering wall would complement the skatepark. These flexible grounds could host impromptu games, relaxing time with friends and perhaps even outdoor classes.

Family-Friendly Retail & Event Zone
Young shoppers and entrepreneurs would have the chance to participate in retail pods for pop-up shops. Nearby, a large event space allows for concerts, fairs and exhibitions geared toward youth engagement supported by on-site sales outlets.

Accessibility for All Ages
Taken together, the HCC blueprint creates a vibrant, safe destination at the heart of Helensburgh custom-built for young folks. Yet, located alongside existing parking, it would still enable multi-generational enjoyment of the waterfront.

The HCC proposal aims to elevate young people’s needs in balance with community-wide priorities. But the Council’s decision is fast approaching. Contact your local Helensburgh and Lomond Councillors and make your voice heard today to advocate for our youth.
