Helensburgh Community Council Announces Ambitious Bid for Waterfront Site

Proposed Helensburgh Waterfront Community Space Visualisation.

Helensburgh’s scenic waterfront has recently been the subject of much debate concerning its future development and use. In December 2023, Helensburgh Community Council unveiled its bold, community-centric vision for the highly coveted site.

By centring on creating a vibrant, sustainable public space for residents and visitors alike, the proposal preserves Helensburgh’s natural outlook and will enhance our lively community spirit. It aims to create an inclusive, multipurpose space that will enrich the lives of all who spend time in Helensburgh – families, youth, entrepreneurs and tourists alike.

Key features of this visionary concept include:

  • A permanent skatepark featuring state-of-the-art concrete bowls, grind rails and more to drive physical activity and bring people together.
  • Flexible event space for markets, performances, festivals and fairs, complementing existing public venues
  • Public ‘green’ space with benches, trees and boules areas to enjoy the open sea views
  • Outdoor retail pods for local businesses to pilot specialist and local retail concepts
  • Additional parking and coach bays to boost tourist access and spending

This vision has been shaped by extensive community consultation over the last five years to incorporate what residents want to see at the site. The proposal brings the community’s aspirations to life in an inclusive, sustainable manner.

Early reactions indicate the bid taps into public sentiment. Diverse local groups like Friends of Hermitage Park, Plastic Free Helensburgh, Fun First and the Helensburgh Skatepark Project have already voiced support for the Community Council’s proposed plan.

The HCC bid promises a brighter, more inclusive future for this, our ‘crown jewel’ site, by sustainably leveraging Helensburgh’s strengths with a community-driven approach. It stands ready and waiting – all it needs now is the Council’s green light.

There will likely be more exciting developments as the evaluation process advances in the weeks ahead.
